What Is Mental Health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is the sense of well-being that a person experiences as a result of their correct cognitive, mood and behavioral functioning, and ultimately, the optimal development of their individual potential for socializing, work and recreation. Health is one of human beings’ basic needs, which is why governments, communities, families and individuals should always be concerned with maintaining optimum levels of health.

Mental health is determined by social, environmental, biological, and psychological factors, and includes conditions such as depression, anxiety, epilepsy, dementia, schizophrenia, and childhood developmental disorders, some of which have worsened in recent years.

Physical and mental health are intertwined. There are a wide variety of diseases that result in clearly identified mental disorders and side effects, among which endocrine, heart, immune and neurological disorders prevail.

One such example is diabetes. Diabetes effects of 10% of the population and can result in side effects such as depression and personality disorders. Furthermore, over 50% of stroke sufferers experience mental disorders, chiefly mood swings.

In recent years studies have sought to discover the link between quality of life and self-determination in order to improve the living conditions of people with mental illness and their families.

Quality of life is a state of general satisfaction, owing to the fulfillment of a person’s potential. It is a subjective sensation of physical, psychological and social well-being. It includes subjective aspects such as intimacy, emotional expression, perceived sense of safety, personal productivity and objective health. It includes objective aspects such as, material well-being, harmonious relations with the physical and social environment and the community, and objectively perceived health.

An important aspect is the assessment of psychological factors, which have become a key feature of quality of life measures. Health is one of the main components of this since it has a direct influence on quality of life as the daily activities humans carry out depend on their state of health. Health also has an indirect influence on quality of life as it affects aspects such as social relations, leisure and autonomy.
