It is an innovative treatment used against cancer, especially indicated to attack leukemia and lymphoma. It is called a transplant, since it seeks to extract a certain type of stem or hematopoietic cells from a donor’s healthy bone marrow to a patient whose cell production is deficient, either due to cancer or some other pathology. This transplant can also be performed from a specific area of the patient’s body to encourage these cells production.

Bone marrow transplant is regularly performed to try to slow the progression of cancer and/or replace damaged cells after receiving treatments such as chemotherapy.

Among the main conditions that are usually treated by a bone marrow transplant, are:

  • Acute or chronic leukemia.
  • Different types of anemia.
  • Bone marrow disorders.
  • Other tumors.

Possible risks and complications:

Although bone marrow transplants usually generate minimal discomfort and complications, there are also some patients who may have more serious consequences.

Some of the possible complications of a bone marrow transplant are:

  • The appearance of new types of cancer.
  • Organ and tissue damage.
  • Opportunistic infections.
  • Infertility.
  • Death.
