Diet and cancer risk

5 September 2022

Key points:

  • The increase in the consumption of red meat and cold cuts has been reflected in an increase in the appearance of colorectal tumors.
  • Sugar is not directly related to the development of cancer, although it is with obesity.
  • Increasing the consumption of fiber and vegetables, along with a healthier and more active life, will reduce the risk of cancer by up to 20%.

Diet and cancer risk

There are several doubts regarding cancer and its origin, including: Can the type of diet be a triggering factor? Dr. Roberto Alfaro Lara, oncologist at ABC Medical Center, will answer some questions regarding diet and cancer.

Sugar consumption and its relationship with cancer

One of the most common questions people have is if sugar feeds cancer. Dr. Alfaro says that although consuming sugar does not cause the appearance of any type of cancer, it is a risk factor for being overweight, which is related to the appearance of different types of cancer such as breast cancer or colorectal tumors.

Meat consumption and its effects on cancer

Due to the excessive consumption of processed foods, sausages, and red meat, there has been an increase in colorectal tumors, the main cause of colon cancer in the world population.
As a result, international guidelines recommend performing at least one colonoscopy between the ages of 45 and 50, as a screening for the detection of precancerous lesions.

“Eating too much red meat increases the risk of colon cancer. It is ideal to consume meat two or three times a week (at most) and in portions not exceeding 100 g.”1

Is there any relationship between alcoholic beverages and the presence of cancer?

On the other hand, just as there are foods that promote the appearance of cancer, the consumption of some beverages can be related to its development.
While no direct relationship has been found for carbonated beverages, it is advised to avoid as much of their consumption as possible.

There is a correlation between the development of cancer and alcoholic beverages. Daily alcohol consumption, in any amount, is an important factor in the development of different types of cancer.

Lastly, dr. Alfaro says that the secret to reducing the risks of cancer, referring to the consumption of food and drinks, is to reduce the amount and portions of processed foods, red meat, cold cuts, and alcoholic beverages; while increasing your intake of fiber and vegetables will help keep you healthy.

Also, by performing physical activity three or four days a week you will be able to reduce the risk of suffering from some type of cancer by 20% or more.
