How should I prepare for an endoscopy?

24 October 2022

In an endoscopy, the doctor will insert an endoscope, an instrument used for visual exploration of the body’s ducts or cavities. Medically speaking, endoscopy is a technique that refers to the study of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum; while colonoscopy uses the endoscope to study the colon, also known as the large intestine.
Due to this, it is necessary to follow a series of steps for a correct preparation for endoscopy.

Preparing for an endoscopy and colonoscopy

Fasting is within the common instructions before these tests. You should stop drinking and eating about eight hours before the procedure to ensure that the stomach is empty.
Also, in some cases, the doctor will request to suspend certain medications such as anticoagulants days before the procedure.

Likewise, in case of suffering from some type of chronic disease, including diabetes or high blood pressure, among others, the doctor will provide specific instructions for each of the medications.
On the other hand, on some occasions, it may be requested to take a laxative or resort to an enema to clean the fecal matter from the intestines.

By preparing for an upper and lower endoscopy, the doctor will be able to correctly and safely identify the images captured in real-time through the endoscope, being able to detect gastrointestinal diseases and disorders, and in some cases, solve them on the spot.
