Low sodium diet

It is a diet that controls sodium (Na) intake to maintain hydration and prevent fluid retention. Sodium (Na) is not only present in salt but also in all foods, especially processed foods. Therefore, they are preserved in this diet, whether sweet or salty. This diet is for patients with high blood pressure, heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure, and iodine treatment. It is important to clarify that a low-sodium diet can never be hypercaloric, since, as we mentioned, sodium (Na) is present in almost all foods, and the more food we provide to the patient, the more sodium (Na) they will ingest. The low sodium diet is classified into:

  • Mild.
  • Moderate.
  • Strict.
The doctor or nutritionist is responsible for determining the degree of restriction of the diet.

Foods offered at ABC Medical Center as part of a Low sodium diet*

  • Salt.
  • Stock cubes.
  • Dairy products**.
  • Canned foods (tuna, vegetables, and fruits).
  • Brines.
  • Commercial canned or preserved sauces.
  • Commercial dressings (gravy, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, thousand islands, ranch, etc.).
  • Canned juices
  • Soft drinks and sparkling water.
  • Powders and syrups to prepare water.
  • Sausages in general.
  • Egg**.
  • Crackers and salty bread.
  • Pastries.
  • Commercial fruits.
  • Green leafy vegetables*.
  • Pancakes.

*Always subject to the doctor’s instructions.
Only the doctor or nutritionist can authorize any of these foods.
