What are cardiovascular diseases?

23 August 2022

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality in the world and they have occupied the first place in Mexico for more than three decades. So, efforts have begun to prevent and treat these conditions promptly.

What are the causes of cardiovascular diseases?

Cardiovascular disease is considered when there is total or partial damage to the heart, when there is a problem with the blood vessels that go to or from the heart, or when there is a poor supply of oxygen or nutrients to the heart.

These problems can be due to genetic causes or also due to lifestyle factors, as well as other medical conditions.

Smoking, high alcohol intake, stress, unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, are some of the modifiable actions that could lead to cardiovascular disease; while age and family history are factors to consider as well.

It is important to consider that these diseases can be prevented from childhood since they are related to modifiable factors such as obesity, overweight, sedentary lifestyle, and excess lipids that, together with many other factors, lead to the four most frequent: diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and smoking.

What are the types of cardiovascular diseases?

Many times cardiovascular diseases can appear without pain or obvious symptoms and even more than one condition at the same time, which is why it is important to be seen by a specialist.

Among the most frequent cardiovascular diseases are:

  • Heart failure.
It occurs when there is an imbalance between the body’s needs and the heart’s ability to pump blood.
  • High blood pressure.
Due to the narrowing of the arterioles, the heart must work harder to fulfill its function, resulting in pressure on the blood vessels.
  • Excess cholesterol.
When there is a dangerous accumulation of cholesterol or other deposits on the arterial walls that can block its flow.
  • Myocardial infarction.
It occurs after the obstruction of an artery, which decreases oxygen in the heart cells causing their death.
  • Angina.
It is due to obstruction in the coronary arteries, preventing the flow of the necessary blood to the heart.
  • Heart rhythm disorders.
Alteration in the frequency or regularity of a person’s normal pulse. They are usually the consequence of some other cardiovascular disease.

ABC Medical Center has an internationally certified acute myocardial infarction care program, called the AMI Code, and the STROKE Code to care for people with stroke; which are activated in patients who have pain and discomfort in the chest or impossibility for movement or speech respectively, giving way to immediate attention that favors timely attention to improve their survival and reduce complications.
