It often causes no noticeable symptoms; however, some signs of chlamydia may appear in women, and to a lesser extent, in men as well.<\/p>\n The bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis<\/i> causes an infection that, due to the lack of symptoms, may go unnoticed. It can affect anyone, although it occurs mainly in young women.<\/p>\n Although it is primarily a sexually transmitted disease, it is also possible for a pregnant woman to infect her baby during childbirth.<\/p>\n In its early stages, infection with this sexually transmitted disease (STD) often causes no signs; however, there are different symptoms of chlamydia in women that may occur:<\/p>\n If chlamydia spreads, the following may occur:<\/p>\n If the infection spreads to the eyes, it can cause eye discharge, itching, or redness.<\/p>\n To diagnose chlamydia, two tests may be used: a urine test to detect the infection, and a swab test, in which a sample is taken from the cervical discharge in women.<\/p>\n Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics and can be cured within one to two weeks, although medication doses may vary from case to case.<\/p>\n A common issue is the recurrence of chlamydia infection; therefore, it is recommended to repeat testing about three months after treatment to prevent or manage new infections.<\/p>\n During the treatment period for chlamydia, it is important not to have sexual intercourse to help prevent the spread of this disease. Generally, doctors recommend sexual abstinence for at least one week after completing treatment.<\/p>\n Although it is possible to have chlamydia without symptoms, an untreated infection can lead to serious consequences. Having chlamydia increases the risk of contracting HIV<\/a> or transmitting it.
