Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, called the crystalline lens, which is responsible for focusing images using the light that enters through the pupil; once that light reaches the retina, the image is translated by the brain, explains Dr. Lorena Ram\u00edrez Pati\u00f1o, ophthalmologist and retina specialist at ABC Medical Center.<\/p>\n

“In Mexico, cataracts affect three million people, with an estimated 140,000 new cases added each year. If left untreated, this eye condition can lead to financial losses for patients and their families.”<\/p>\n

The crystalline lens is composed of fibers and proteins that remain the same from birth; as we age, these gradually become cloudy, leading to a condition known as a cataract.<\/p>\n

Everyone can develop this condition at some point in life, but certain factors increase the risk of developing it:<\/p>\n

\n
• Ultraviolet rays. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays is a very common cause of cataracts. That’s why it’s important to wear polarized sunglasses, non-polarized lenses won’t protect the eye from solar radiation.<\/li>\n
• Tobacco smoke. This increases oxidative stress and can damage the blood vessels in the eye.<\/li>\n
• Diabetes. This condition can cause the lens to become hydrated due to changes in glucose levels, which increases the likelihood of developing a cataract.<\/li>\n
• Eye surgeries. Having had other eye surgeries, particularly on the retina, can lead to a secondary cataract down the line; for this reason, doctors often remove the cataract during that same surgery, before it becomes a problem for the patient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
