Today, there are several treatment options available for people with PTSD, which fall into three main categories:<\/p>\n

• Medication-based treatments: depending on the symptoms, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, or other drugs may be prescribed. The choice of medication depends on the specific symptom, how long it’s expected to last, and the treatment goal.<\/li>\n
• Therapy-based treatments: there are several different approaches. <\/li>\n
• Behavioral therapy: aims to understand the patient’s harmful behaviors to help improve them.<\/li>\n
• Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): used to help change thought patterns and how the patient relates to others.<\/li>\n
• Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): similar to CBT, but also addresses the patient’s spiritual side.<\/li>\n
• Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): the patient works through the underlying issue while also engaging with their current environment to reintegrate into it in a healthier way.<\/li>\n
• Exposure therapy: the patient is gradually exposed to situations similar to the one that caused the trauma, but in a safe setting and always alongside a professional who guides them and helps them feel better.<\/li>\n
• Other treatments: depending on the case, other treatment approaches may also be used, such as certain sedatives, to name one example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Which Treatment Should Be Chosen?<\/p>\n

  As with many conditions, every case is different, some patients are able to fully recover from PTSD, while others learn to manage it. What matters most is receiving specialized care as soon as possible, so the patient can return to a normal life that allows them to be happy, productive, and functional, notes Dr. Szydlo.<\/p>\n

  It’s also worth noting that, in some cases, even after someone is considered fully recovered, they could experience a relapse if re-exposed to the traumatic situation, requiring specialized care once again.<\/p>\n
