A pregnancy test, as the name suggests, is a method used to determine whether a woman is pregnant.

Pregnancy tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a person’s blood or urine. This hormone is produced after the egg is fertilized and implants in the uterus, about a week after fertilization.

When wondering when to take a pregnancy test, remember that these tests detect hCG, so some time must pass after conception for the result to be accurate.

It’s recommended to wait between seven and fifteen days after ovulation to get a more reliable result. Keep in mind that while ovulation typically occurs about two weeks after the first day of a menstrual period, every woman is different, and this timing can vary.

While different brands have their own features, there are generally only two main types of pregnancy tests, and it’s important to know how to use each one correctly.

Urine Pregnancy Test

A urine pregnancy test can be done either in a lab or at home, and works by measuring the presence of the hormone, returning either a positive or negative result. For this type of test, it’s recommended to wait about fifteen days after conception before testing.

While this test provides quick results, it also carries a higher margin of error. If taken too early, you may get a false negative because your urine may not yet contain enough hCG.

Blood Pregnancy Test

This test is always performed at a clinical laboratory and is much more accurate than a urine test, although results aren’t immediate. There are two subtypes: a qualitative test, which simply confirms whether someone is pregnant or not, and a quantitative test, which measures the exact hormone level in the body, helping determine the gestational age and whether the pregnancy is progressing normally.

Once you take a pregnancy test, results can vary depending on the type of test used, how it’s interpreted, whether external factors affected it, and even how much time has passed since conception.

A positive result means hCG was detected in the urine or blood; a negative result means the hormone wasn’t detected in urine or blood, though a negative result doesn’t necessarily mean the woman isn’t pregnant, only that hCG levels weren’t high enough to detect yet. If you’re unsure, it’s recommended to repeat the test a few days later.

Beyond a positive or negative result, some tests may also show invalid, inconclusive, or error results, which can happen because of mistakes during testing or issues with the test device itself.

If you’re using a home pregnancy test, follow the specific instructions for that brand; for a blood test, follow the guidance given by lab staff.
