In Mexico, cerebrovascular diseases are the sixth leading cause of death and are more frequent in women than in men, according to 2017 data from INEGI.<\/span> Stroke is especially dangerous for women over 50 years old, since before menopause estrogens have a protective effect against brain damage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the most common causes of strokes are:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
• A bad diet.<\/span><\/li>\n
• Lack of physical activity.<\/span><\/li>\n
• Excessive consumption of tobacco and alcohol.<\/span><\/li>\n
• Uncontrolled hypertension.<\/span><\/li>\n
• A high red blood cell count.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  The most common symptom of a stroke is loss of muscle strength in the arms, legs, or face.<\/span> However, other types of alerts should be considered:<\/span><\/p>\n

  \n
  • Numbness of the face, legs, or arms.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Confusion.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding what is being said<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Visual problems.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Difficulty walking, as well as dizziness and loss of balance.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Intense headache.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Weakness or loss of consciousness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Preventing a stroke is possible, especially if the family medical history is known or if symptoms have occurred more frequently in recent months.<\/span> To prevent it you can:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
    • Eat a balanced diet.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Avoid tobacco use.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Moderate alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Consult a specialist about your cardiovascular risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
