Alpha-fetoprotein

Indications:

At the time of your visit, please have a minimum fast of 8 hours and maximum of 12 hours. In patients 0 to 1 years old the minimum fast is 2 hours and in 1 to 6 years old the minimum fast is 4 hours.

What it's for:

Gestational: Gestational age assessment test to determine if amniocentesis is necessary. Non-Gestational: Auxiliary test for the evaluation of testicular, hepatocellular, pancreatic, stomach, lung, ovarian and colon carcinoma, congenital pathologies of the neural tube. Distinguish between hepatocellular carcinoma and chronic liver disease. Surveillance of the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in people with a positive family history of liver cancer, surveillance of the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in individuals of specific ethnic and gender groups who do not have cirrhosis of the liver but have a confirmed diagnosis of chronic hepatitis B infection. It is discretely elevated in non-malignant liver diseases such as hepatitis and active cirrhosis.
