Our History

Centro Médico ABC is run by a Board of Trustees, it does not have an owner, so it reinvests its financial surplus to serve economically vulnerable communities through disease prevention and high specialty surgery programs to neighboring communities, as well as teaching and research.

On December 12, the American Hospital is inaugurated in Mexico City. Mr. Simón Lara was the first ABC philanthropist to donate a plot of land to build the hospital, an act that motivated the American Benevolent Society to collect donations for its construction.

Thanks to the donation of Mr. Weetman Pearson and the unconditional support of his wife, Mrs. Annie Cass, both from the English community in Mexico, Cowdray Sanatorium opens its doors on Mariano Escobedo Street; it would later be known as the “English Hospital”.

The American Hospital and Cowdray Sanatorium join forces to create the American British Cowdray Hospital, I.A.P., governed since then by a Board of Trustees whose members, belonging to various communities, support the Institution altruistically.

A fundraising campaign is carried out to build the ABC Hospital in Observatorio, with great participation from the Mexican people.

The “Today and Tomorrow” Campaign officially ends, which in seven and a half years reaches the record figure of 20 million dollars (double what was originally planned and in less time) for the ABC Hospital Development Program, today Centro Médico ABC.

The American College of Radiology (ACR)

Recognition that ensures the highest level in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed.

Joint Commission International (JCI)

Centro Médico ABC complies with the accreditation standards of the Joint Commission International (JCI) and is the only health institution in the country to achieve accreditation simultaneously for its two campuses on four consecutive occasions.

This recognition confirms that Centro Médico ABC has improved safety in all its processes, both clinical and supportive, so that its patients receive the best possible care.
