What it's for:

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hyperandrogenism (along with other sex steroids measurements). As initial screening in adults with bioavailable testosterone measurement. Depending on the results, this may be supplemented by measurements of sex hormone-binding globulin and occasionally other androgenic steroids (e.g., 17-hydroxyprogesterone). An adjunct in the diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH); DHEA/DHEAS measurements play a secondary role to cortisol/cortisone, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, and androstenedione measurements. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of premature adrenarche.
