What is Benign fibroids or tumors?

11:00 - 28 April , 2021

Disease

They develop in the uterus and originate in the smooth muscle cells that live in the mesometrium (wall of the uterus). They are usually frequent in women between the ages of 20 and 50, who may suffer from several fibroids or develop just one, affecting their quality of life.

The causes that generate them are unknown, but various investigations show that it is a hormonal disorder and that the growth of fibroids is directly related to the level of progesterone. They can also be due to genetic issues.

Signs and symptoms Benign fibroids or tumors

Many women have no symptoms, although most have:

  • Alterations in the menstrual cycle (heavy, painful, or irregular bleeding).
  • Cramps.
  • Pelvic pain.
  • Low back pain.
  • Infertility and/or abortions.
  • Swelling in the abdomen or lower abdomen.

¿Is it possible to prevent them?

Although the appearance of fibroids cannot be prevented, you can reduce the risks by considering the following:

  • Avoid being overweight.
  • Eat a low-fat and low-sugar diet.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Add vitamin C and E to your diet.
  • Have periodical check-ups.

Diagnosis and treatment Benign fibroids or tumors

If the fibroid is large, your doctor can simply feel it; however, in order to have a clear diagnosis, he or she will request a transvaginal ultrasound, a hysterosonogram, or an MRI.

Laparoscopic surgery, either abdominal or vagina, will be necessary in case of severe and recurrent pain, if the tumor grows in a short time, or the tumor mass is located in a place that affects other organs due to its pressure (incontinence, constant need to urinate, intestinal problems, renal alterations).
