What is Hypertension in pregnancy?

It refers to high blood pressure during pregnancy, which usually occurs during the second half thereof and usually disappears after the baby is born. 

Types of high blood pressure

  • Gestational hypertension: when the woman has high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy. 
  • Chronic hypertension:  women with high blood pressure before pregnancy or before 20 weeks thereof. 
  • Chronic hypertension with superimposed pre-eclampsia: Women with chronic hypertension before pregnancy who have protein in their urine or other conditions during pregnancy related to blood pressure.
  • Pre-eclampsia: it is when hypertension occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy and there is damage to the kidneys, liver, blood, or brain. 

Signs and symptoms Hypertension in pregnancy

  • Persistent headache.
  • Pain in the abdomen.
  • Edema.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Urinate less than normal. 
  • Blurred or double vision.

  • Placental abruption.
  • Poor fetal growth.
  • Seizures (eclampsia).
