What is Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma?

16:27 - 3 November , 2023

Disease

It is a low-incidence oncological disease that initially occurs in the soft tissues of the body, especially in the arms or legs, as well as in the back of the abdominal organs.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma gets its name from the way cancer cells behave under the microscope, as they are different from the body tissues in which they develop and grow in various shapes and sizes.

Although the direct cause of the cellular mutation that causes undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is unknown, some development risks have been determined, such as:

  • Age, since it is more common in adults over 50 years old, although it can occur at any time.
  • Previous radiation therapy treatments.

Signs and symptoms Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma

The symptoms depend on the area in which the tumor is located, generally occurring in the arms and legs, manifesting the following:

  • Nodule, tumor, lump, or swollen area.
  • Pain.
  • Numbness.
  • Swelling in the hand or foot of the affected limb.

If the sarcoma occurs in the abdominal area, there may be:

  • Pain.
  • Constipation.
  • High fever.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Decreased body weight.

Diagnosis and treatment Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma

The specialist, in addition to analyzing your clinical history and symptoms, will perform a physical examination in which they will pay special attention to the affected area to try to detect the size and depth of the tumor, as well as identify if it is connected to nearby tissues and if there is inflammation or damage to the nerves. Also, the following tests will be requested to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any other anomaly:

  • Tissue biopsy.
  • X-rays.
  • MRI.
  • Computed tomography.
  • Positron emission tomography.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma treatment depends on where the tumor is located, but usually includes:

  • Medication.
  • Chemotherapy.
  • Radiation therapy.
  • Immunotherapy.
  • Surgery.

Since its inauguration in 2009, our Cancer Center has offered chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments at the level of the best medical centers in the world through a comprehensive care model for cancer patients.
