What is Sterility?

16:31 - 27 April , 2021

Disease

It refers to the inability or difficulty of a couple to get a woman pregnant after a year of having sex on a regular basis without using contraception.

Types of sterility

Primary: when the couple has no previous pregnancies.

Secondary: the couple already has a history of one or more pregnancies.

Sterility can be due to the following factors:

  • Female: cervical anatomical or functional alterations, endometritis, fibroids or benign uterine tumors, alterations in the fallopian tubes, and hormonal imbalances, among others.
  • Male: testicular conditions due to genetic or congenital reasons, or infections, as well as the absence or scarcity of sperm, among others.
  • Immunological or psychological.

Both the female and male factors are usually the same, age, tobacco and alcohol consumption, overweight, low weight, excess or lack of exercise.

How to prevent it

Although infertility does not present any warning signs, you may decrease the chances of its occurrence if you consider the following suggestions:

  • Avoid having sex with multiple unprotected partners.
  • Maintain healthy habits and a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Prevent any infection.
  • Avoid contracting diseases such as diabetes.
  • Mumps vaccine.

Diagnosis and treatment Sterility

Your ABC doctor will ask you for studies that he or she considers necessary to assess the best alternative for you, which may consist of surgery, infection treatments, hormonal medications, or assisted reproductive techniques.

By means of a sperm analysis (semen collection) the man’s fertilization capacity can be determined and, in the event of a problem, try to find its origin.

Studies in women are more complex because there can be multiple causes and each one needs to be studied.
