Early detection of breast cancer is the only and best option to discover this disease in time.
Women must be diagnosed at an early age to reduce death from breast cancer, so it is necessary to teach, learn, and practice, according to each woman’s age, the three basic actions of detection of this disease: self-examination, clinical examination, and mammogram.
It is important to know about breast health, different risk factors can favor the development of breast cancer, such as:
- Aging: the older you are, the higher the risk
- Family (or personal) history: mother or sisters have had breast cancer
- Menstrual life of more than 40 years: your menstruation began before the age of 12 and menopause began after the age of 52
- Known carrier of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes: these are genes capable of producing cancer suppressor proteins
- Exposure to ionizing radiation: mainly in development or growth (adolescence)
- Chest radiotherapy treatment
- Not having had children
- First full-term pregnancy after age 30
- Hormone therapy for more than 5 years
- Diet rich in carbohydrates and low in fiber
- Diet rich in fats of both animal source and trans fatty acids
- Obesity, mainly after menopause
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Alcohol consumption greater than 15 g/day
- Smoking
Lifestyle risk factors are modifiable and can lower your risk of breast cancer, and it’s always important to be in constant contact with your doctor.
We recommend you increase self-responsibility and self-care, which means taking care of yourself to promote health:
- From the age of 20, perform a breast self-examination once a month
- See a specialist who performs a clinical examination of your breasts
- If you are between 40 and 69 years old, request a mammogram
- Maintain your ideal weight
- Increase fiber intake such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables
- Exercise 30 to 60 minutes every day
- Reduce alcohol consumption.
- Do not smoke.
