The da Vinci robot facilitates the treatment of inguinal hernias

22 August 2022

Key points:

  • Da Vinci robot hernioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure.
  • The surgeon’s skill will be increased with the support of the da Vinci system.
  • Untreated hernias can trigger serious dangers for the patient.

Inguinal hernias, in addition to causing great pain, can have serious life-threatening complications, occasionally, if not treated promptly.

An inguinal hernia occurs when a piece of tissue, mainly the intestine, pushes out through a weakened area in the abdominal muscles.

To repair this hernia, it is necessary to return the organ to the proper place while the weakened tissue is repaired. One way to do this is through traditional open surgery, in which the patient has a large incision made through the muscle and tissue, leading to a more painful procedure, longer recovery time, and more time off from work or being hospitalized.

Through minimally invasive robotic surgery, hernioplasty can be performed with the support of the da Vinci surgical system, which will give the surgeon an extensive range of motion, greater than human capacity.

Thanks to the benefits of da Vinci, the surgeon will have high-definition 3D vision along with a complete view of the surgical field, allowing difficult-to-reach anatomical areas to be treated.

It also offers greater precision in the resection and reconstruction procedure; benefiting the patient with less traumatic surgery, reduced incisions, minimal bleeding, as well as a faster and less painful postoperative recovery.

Being a slave robot, da Vinci only provides support to the surgeon during the procedure, which will be reflected in a decrease in the risk of nerve and vascular injury, and an increase in the doctor’s skill and neutralization of fine tremor, thanks to which more complex surgeries are performed with greater precision.

Also, for the patient’s peace of mind, as a master-slave system, da Vinci will never make decisions or make incisions on its own, the surgeon is the one who indicates where to perform the procedures.
