According to data from the Secretariat of Health, smoking is responsible for 43,000 deaths a year in Mexico.
Among the main diseases associated with smoking are different pathologies caused by the inhalation of tobacco smoke, which contains more than seven thousand chemical substances, of which around 70 are carcinogenic:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Heart problems.
- Different types of cancer, especially lung cancer.
Cigarette consumption is a problem that affects a large number of people in the world, but in Mexico this practice is carried out from an early age, according to recent surveys that report that 86,000 children in fifth and sixth grade (between 10 and 11 years old) smoke daily.
Exposure to secondhand smoke in homes decreased from 7.4 million in 2011 to 5.5 million in 2016-2017, but it remains high in bars, restaurants, and public transport.
It is important that teachers, doctors, family members, and friends receive information from teachers, doctors, family, and friends about the damage that tobacco consumption causes to the body from an early age and set the example of not smoking.
Know and share the benefits of quitting smoking in the short, medium, and long term:
Aside from the damage caused to the body, there are negative effects on the environment. Each year tobacco farming uses large amounts of pesticides and pollutants that harm water supplies:
- uses 3 million hectares of land
- causes between two and four percent of the planet’s deforestation
- generates two million tons of solid waste with thousands of toxic substances
