Learn about the different types of endoscopy

25 October 2022

Endoscopy is a procedure that involves inserting a long, flexible tube, known as an endoscope, down the throat. With this, and through a small camera, the doctor will be able to examine different parts such as the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum.
Through this procedure, signs and symptoms are investigated to detect diseases and gastrointestinal disorders and, in some cases, solve them.

What are the types of endoscopy?

It depends on its purpose:

It is used for the study of the upper digestive tract, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It is usually performed to evaluate the causes that could be due to abdominal discomfort such as heartburn, burning, nausea, or difficulty swallowing, among others.

A test used to detect changes or abnormalities within the large intestine (colon) and rectum. If necessary, polyps and other types of abnormal tissue can be removed through the colonoscope and during the procedure. Tissue samples can also be taken.

The doctor may request a colonoscopy to investigate intestinal signs and symptoms, detect colon cancer, or search for polyps.

Therapeutic endoscopy

Through a set of endoscopic techniques, it is possible to cure some lesions permanently or alleviate others to improve the patient’s quality of life and prognosis.

Diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy has a wide utility, as it is in:

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
  • Therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Extraction of foreign bodies.
  • Obstructions.
  • Polypectomy.
  • Hemostatic techniques.
  • Hemorrhoids, obesity, and Zenker’s diverticulum treatment.
