Disease

What is Hypertension in pregnancy?

It refers to high blood pressure during pregnancy, which usually occurs during the second half thereof and usually disappears after the baby is born.

Types of high blood pressure

  • Gestational hypertension: when the woman has high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Chronic hypertension:  women with high blood pressure before pregnancy or before 20 weeks thereof.
  • Chronic hypertension with superimposed pre-eclampsia: Women with chronic hypertension before pregnancy who have protein in their urine or other conditions during pregnancy related to blood pressure.
  • Pre-eclampsia: it is when hypertension occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy and there is damage to the kidneys, liver, blood, or brain.

Symptoms

  • Persistent headache.
  • Pain in the abdomen.
  • Edema.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Urinate less than normal.
  • Blurred or double vision.

How to prevent it

Early diagnosis and treatment help reduce the risk of complications. This is why it is important that you attend your prenatal check-ups, take the medications that your doctor indicates to control blood pressure, and maintain a healthy life, in addition to being properly nourished.

Diagnosis and treatment

The necessary studies will be requested to verify your baby’s health, which may consist of a continuous monitoring of your blood pressure and counting your baby’s movements and kicks, in addition to a nonstress test, biophysical profile, Doppler studies, laboratory tests, and medications.

Potential risks:

If not treated in time, this condition can cause decreased blood circulation in your liver, kidneys, uterus, and placenta, causing:

  • Placental abruption.
  • Poor fetal growth.
  • Seizures (eclampsia).
  • Death of mother and baby.
