Benefits of Donating Platelets

Donating platelets benefits patients because they’re essential for treating certain conditions that affect the immune system, such as leukemia, immune disorders, severe infections, or even chemotherapy.

Platelet donation is a process in which only platelets are extracted from the blood, while the other blood components, such as red blood cells and plasma, are returned to the donor.

This type of donation is done through a process known as apheresis, and while it’s similar to a conventional blood donation for the donor, it takes between one and two hours. Since the other blood components are returned to the donor, recovery is also quicker.

How Often Can I Donate Platelets?

Because recovery is faster with apheresis, you can donate platelets more frequently than with a conventional blood donation.

A person can donate platelets once every eight days, or up to 24 times a year over a longer period. However, platelets remain viable for only up to five days, so it’s best to donate only when an immediate recipient is identified.

How Are Platelets Donated, and How Should You Prepare?

You might be wondering exactly how platelet donation works. Since it’s a type of blood donation, platelet donation also comes with a few specific requirements for a donor to be eligible:

  • Not having previously received a blood component transfusion.
  • Not having previously received a platelet injection, platelet-rich plasma, transfer factor treatments, or immunotherapy.
  • Not having taken pain or anti-inflammatory medications.
  • If you’ve taken any other medication, it’s important to check with the blood bank to find out how much time needs to pass since the last dose.

This is in addition to following the standard requirements for a regular blood donation.

Can You Donate Blood and Platelets at the Same Time?

Although the processes are similar, when donating platelets, staff extract the other blood components and return them to the donor. Because of this, it’s not possible to donate blood and platelets at the same time.

However, thanks to this same process, you can donate platelets one month after donating blood, or, conversely, donate whole blood two weeks after donating platelets.

Donating blood and platelets can both save a life, which is why it’s so important to do so whenever possible.
