Regardless of whether a face mask is used to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or any other airborne, droplet-transmitted disease, mask-wearing is an essential prevention and control measure designed to limit the spread of various respiratory illnesses caused by viruses.

It protects healthy individuals from coming into contact with viruses and prevents infected individuals from spreading the virus to others.

There are two main types of masks:

  • Medical masks: Certified in accordance with national or international standards, these masks initially filter at least 95% of droplets. They are single-use and resistant to bodily fluids.
  • Hygienic masks: Also known as cloth masks, these can be made from various combinations of fabrics, layers, and shapes to filter droplets at different levels, though they do not reach the efficiency of a medical mask.

Who Should Wear a Face Mask?

  • People with flu-like symptoms.
  • People in direct contact with someone who has the flu or other respiratory illnesses.
  • People in crowded spaces, regardless of whether the individuals around them are known or unknown.

How to Wear a Face Mask Properly

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling the mask.
  • Inspect the mask to ensure it is in optimal condition before use.
  • Ensure it is facing the right way so that the correct side is placed against your face.
  • Secure the straps around your ears.
  • Cover your face from the bridge of your nose to below your chin, leaving no gaps or spaces.
  • Avoid touching the mask while wearing it. If you do, wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Replace the mask as soon as it becomes damp or wet.
  • To remove the mask, pull it off from back to front by the ear loops using clean hands.
  • Properly dispose of the mask after use by sealing it in a plastic bag and throwing it in the trash. If using a cloth mask, wash it immediately after use.
