Ways to reduce bad cholesterol on a daily basis

4 May 2022

Key points:

  • The correct diet is a great support in reducing bad cholesterol
  • Exercise favors blood pressure to avoid cardiovascular risks

In the body, cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood and is used to form healthy cells, but having high levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

Detecting that there is high cholesterol in our body is not necessarily dangerous, but this situation must be prevented and reduce this harmful cholesterol for health.

Dr. Eduardo Fernández Campuzano, an internal medicine specialist at ABC Medical Center, says that our body is designed for physical activity, which is why exercising favors that you have an adequate proportion between good cholesterol over bad. A balance that will favor the vital functions, allowing them to be performed adequately. Additionally, exercise will help lower blood pressure, which will result in less risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks or stroke.

When thinking about exercise our mind automatically goes to gyms and similar places, but the reality is that exercising is available to everyone, being able to climb stairs, perform push-ups, and favor the use of stairs over elevators, whether in our home or office. Dr. Fernández indicates that even during working hours you can move your legs or get up for about 5 minutes every hour to help activate the circulatory system.

On the other hand, food plays an important role in the fight against bad cholesterol; when you eat foods that raise good cholesterol, you will be fighting the accumulation of bad cholesterol. Among these foods are fish, nuts, and some oils, which will help to benefit health.

Egg consumption has been demonized by pointing out that it raises cholesterol levels, but recent research has shown that this food is not so harmful, and even provides various nutrients such as iron, which are difficult to find in other foods. But Dr. Fernández indicates that what is important in nutrition is balance, since eating a Spanish omelet that was prepared with five eggs and other fatty ingredients is not the same as eating just a couple of eggs.

Therefore, the recommendation is to consume good fats that will help you cleanse your body of bad fats, remember that when in doubt, the most important thing is to see the experts who will be able to guide you so that you make the best decisions about both food and exercise.
