COVID-19: Delta variant and vaccination

10 September 2021

Key points:

  •  SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant has caused concern in recent months.
  • Here is some interesting and informative data, take your precautions and also consider vaccination as an effective method to reduce the risk of complications if you contract the disease and to contain the presence of new variants.
  • As we know, the “traffic light” system in Mexico City and the country is constantly changing, therefore, it is extremely important that you continue to take care of yourself and your loved ones.

What is a variant?

They are mutations of the original virus which generate small changes in its development and, sometimes, even in the symptoms.

To date, there are many SARS-CoV-2 variants, however, only a few are worrying due to how aggressively they attack or how quickly they spread.

About the Delta variant

It was detected in October 2020 in India and is currently present in more than 92 countries, including Mexico.

Its spread has been increasing rapidly, making it the dominant variant globally.

What are its effects and symptoms?

We have seen that the initial symptoms are no longer the same, that the viral load is different and therefore the severity with which COVID-19 attacks the body.

Before, loss of taste and smell were decisive symptoms of a COVID-19 diagnosis, now symptoms have been added to the list that you may or may not have in a coronavirus infection.

Delta variant predominant symptoms:

  • Headache, sore throat, and runny nose

Common symptoms of coronavirus:

  • Cough, fever, and loss of taste and smell

Symptoms to watch for:

  • Shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle pain, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea

Why should we take this new variant seriously?

Despite the freedom that has been recovered with the “traffic light” change, we must continue to take care of ourselves.

This variant spreads quickly, easily, and affects people of all ages, even if your vaccination against COVID-19 is complete you are not exempt from contracting the virus because its viral load and transmissibility is more powerful as we can see here:

COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 original) Una persona enferma puede contagiar hasta 2 personas. Variante Alfa una persona enferma puede contagiar hasta 4 personas Variante Delta una persona enferma puede contagiar hasta 9 personas

Am I protected against new variants with the vaccines?

It has been shown that the available vaccines continue to be effective against the most important variants, although with a varied percentage due to the mutation of the virus, however, we are sure that the specialists work daily so that this is not something we need to worry about.

We do have to protect ourselves and follow the appropriate protocols.

Should we take specific care for the Delta variant?

The care is exactly the same:

  • Wash your hands constantly.
  • Use your facemask.
  • Stay home, as much as possible.
  • Get vaccinated.
  • If you feel any symptoms, no matter how slight, get tested.
  • Keep a healthy distance of 1.5 meters.
  • Open windows in closed places.
  • Cover your mouth with your arm when you cough or sneeze even with the mask on.
