In a clinical laboratory, biological samples are collected for clinical diagnosis. Because of the potential risks these samples can pose to others, it’s important to follow strict safety measures in the lab.

Laboratory Safety MeasuresSafety measures are what help reduce risks for lab staff, patients, and anyone else present in the facility, notes Dr. Daniel Aguirre Chavarría, lab director and clinical pathologist at ABC Medical Center.

What Are the Safety Standards in a Clinical Laboratory?Various laboratory safety standards are outlined in Mexico’s General Health Law to protect people’s health before, during, and after sample collection.

These measures also help prevent sample contamination, reduce the risk of transmissible diseases spreading to others, and ensure samples are properly disposed of once they’ve been used.

These regulations help establish clear laboratory safety rules, covering everything from the organization of instruments within the facility, biosafety practices, protective equipment for lab staff, proper handling of chemicals used to analyze samples, and the correct disposal of any waste generated during sample collection.

Laboratory Safety EquipmentLaboratory staff are required to wear a fully closed lab coat, a face mask, safety goggles, gloves, and comfortable, easy-to-clean, non-absorbent footwear. This helps protect both lab personnel and the people they’re assisting from potential risks.

Patients visiting the lab don’t need to wear any specific equipment, though they’re welcome to wear a face mask if they choose.

Why Is It So Important to Follow Safety and Hygiene Standards in the Clinical Laboratory?Dr. Aguirre notes that safety and hygiene standards in the lab aren’t just meant to protect the health of workers and patients, they also help preserve the integrity of the sample and ensure reliable test results.

Additionally, environmental care matters too, which is reflected in the proper handling of all equipment used throughout these processes.
