Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each with its own characteristics

20 December 2022

Mujer en sus diferentes etapas del embarazo

Pregnancy is the period during which the fetus develops in the woman’s uterus and it is necessary to know the stages of pregnancy for better control.

The average duration of pregnancy is around 40 weeks and during that time the following stages of pregnancy occur month by month:

First trimester (from day 1 to 12 weeks)

They are the first three months after conception. Among its first signs, the woman will detect a lack of menstrual periods, tiredness, breast enlargement, abdominal distension, and possibly nausea.

During this period, the baby will go from being a group of cells to the development of an embryo and, later, to a fetus.

This is the ideal moment to go to the doctor and keep track of both your health and your baby’s health.

Second trimester (weeks 13 to 28)

From this moment on, nausea may no longer occur and you may feel a renewed sense of well-being. Your pregnancy will be more noticeable.

Now the fetus already has all its organs, beginning the process of growth in size and weight.

The umbilical cord will also continue to thicken to allow nutrients to be carried to the fetus, although it is a delicate moment for the baby since the harmful substances that the mother ingests will also be transported through the umbilical cord.

Around week 14, the doctor will be able to identify your baby’s sex, if desired.

Third trimester (from week 29 to 40)

This is the final phase of your pregnancy, at which point you may again feel uncomfortable with weight gain and false labor contractions, known as Braxton-Hicks contractions.

On the other hand, it is recommended that you take childbirth classes, especially if you are a new mother.

Regarding the fetus, it continues to grow in size and weight and can see and hear. Organs such as the brain, lungs, or kidneys continue to mature and the baby begins to settle head down for the big day.

Broadly speaking, these are the main characteristics of the stages of pregnancy, but it must be remembered that each pregnancy is unique, and even in mothers who are having their second or third child, the symptoms and sensations may vary.

From the moment you discover that you are pregnant, it is advisable to see your obstetrician to help you throughout the pregnancy.
