The da Vinci robot and its benefits in fundoplication

Key points:

  • Fundoplication is a surgical technique used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux.
  • Thanks to the da Vinci robot, the patient undergoes minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
  • The surgeon will be supported by the da Vinci robot to achieve better precision.

Fundoplication is a procedure focused on the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, through which an incision is made between the esophagus and the stomach to prevent food and gastric acids from returning to the esophagus.

This surgical technique can be performed through minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopically, using the da Vinci robot.

With the da Vinci robot, it will have the most commercialized surgical equipment in recent years, being a remote handling slave system, with deployable mounted arms with multi-position configuration joints, designed to maximize the surgical workspace externally and internally.

This surgical assistant allows an improved and three-dimensional vision of the area to be treated, helping the surgeon to identify the structures in a better way and have greater precision in the procedures. As it is a slave robot, procedures are not programmed, the surgeon is the one who gives the orders and directs the movements, which are millimetrically optimized thanks to the support of the surgical assistant.

In the Nissen-type fundoplication, the da Vinci robot offers the surgeon a safer alternative to open surgery, in which it is often necessary to make large incisions in the patient’s abdomen to reach the necessary area. Now, with this surgical assistant, the need for large incisions is completely eliminated and the surgeon will be able to perform this procedure through small incisions, with great safety and greater precision.

In this way, an excellent clinical result will be obtained, by maximizing the surgeon’s skill and allowing them to perform a minimally invasive surgery with a greater visual field.

Additionally, patients will benefit from a process supported by da Vinci with:

  • Small scars compared to the other procedures.
  • Reduces the risk of infection.
  • Shorter hospital stay.
  • Less blood loss.
  • Less pain than any other surgical alternative.
  • Return to normal life in less time.
  • A much faster recovery.
