Gynecology is the branch of medicine focused on the female reproductive system, addressing all conditions related to the uterus, vagina, and ovaries, as well as the hormones that regulate their function and the postpartum period.
Even if a woman initially considers herself healthy, it’s important to keep up with regular checkups at a gynecology center, including routine tests for early detection of potential conditions.
Gynecological PreventionIt’s recommended to have a first gynecological checkup between ages 13 and 15, or once the patient becomes sexually active.
Ideally, a gynecological checkup should be done once a year if everything is normal. Depending on whether any condition is detected, visits may need to be more frequent.
From that point on, a gynecologist will accompany the woman throughout her life to help ensure her reproductive system stays healthy.
STIs and Other ConditionsThere are various conditions a woman may experience throughout her life. Some don’t cause noticeable symptoms, which is why routine checkups are so important.
Among the gynecological conditions that most commonly affect women are:
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are various STIs a person can contract, each with its own complications and symptoms. The most common include chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and human papillomavirus (HPV), among others.
- Breast cancer. A type of cancer that originates in breast cells, causing them to multiply uncontrollably; if not treated in time, it can pose a serious risk to a woman’s life.
- Endometriosis. A condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing pain, infertility, and other issues during menstruation.
- Osteoporosis. Although osteoporosis can also affect men, it’s important for women to get screened after menopause, since the drop in estrogen reduces calcium absorption.
Through the gynecology area, patients can access woman-centered care for prevention, diagnosis, timely treatment, and follow-up at every stage of life.
