What is dental sensitivity?

23 January 2026

This refers to an episode of highly intense dental pain that manifests in response to external stimuli such as high or low temperatures, acidic or sweet flavors, or when touching the teeth.

Dental sensitivity can affect the quality of life of those who suffer from it, as the pain can be so strong that they avoid consuming foods and beverages that might trigger it.

According to some studies, dental sensitivity is due to the fluids located inside the dentinal tubules being affected by external alterations that generate pressure on the nerves, which produces pain.

When the enamel or cementum of the teeth is lost, the dentinal tubules are exposed, leading to dental sensitivity.

There are some factors that can contribute to the onset of dental sensitivity, such as:

  • Wear of the enamel and cementum.
  • Gingival recession (receding gums).
  • Brushing with excessive force.
  • Cervical abrasion and opening of dentinal tubules.
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Acidic foods and drinks.
  • Dental treatments.
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding).
  • Gastric ulcer.
  • Anorexia.
  • Bulimia.

Signs and symptoms Dental Sensitivity

  • Severe pain in response to a mild stimulus.
  • Painful episode with a duration similar to the duration of the stimulus.
  • Precise localization of the affected tooth and the pain area.

Risks and Complications of Dental Sensitivity:

  • Cavities (Dental decay).
  • Gingivitis.
  • Periodontitis.

Diagnosis and treatment Dental Sensitivity

Your dentist will ask you about your symptoms, oral hygiene habits, and will perform a dental examination.

The treatment to follow consists of:

  • Application of fluoride in the sensitive areas to strengthen the dental enamel and reduce pain.
  • Use of desensitizing toothpaste to help minimize pain or discomfort.
  • Surgical gum graft when the tooth root has lost gingival tissue.
  • Application of adhesive resin to sensitive root surfaces.

To prevent sensitive teeth, it is necessary to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, in addition to using dental floss every day.
