What is central nervous system (cns) vascular malformations?

26 January 2026

These are congenital abnormalities of the cerebral vascular system that occur during gestation and affect the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis, disability, or death, either before or after birth.

Despite clinical studies and research conducted on the origin of these malformations, the reasons why the embryo’s nervous system does not fully develop are unknown. However, certain conditions are known to favor their appearance, such as:

  • Obese mother
  • Diabetic mother
  • Mother taking anticonvulsants
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Infections during pregnancy
  • Environmental factors

Central Nervous System Vascular Malformations are classified as:

  • Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas
  • Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)
  • Cavernous Malformations
  • Venous Malformations
  • Capillary Telangiectasias

Signs and symptoms Central Nervous System (CNS) Vascular Malformations

The symptoms are variable and depend on the individual; they may even be absent. However, the most common signs are:

  • Severe and continuous headache (migraine)
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis
  • Problems walking
  • Visual impairments
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Behavioral and speech disturbances

The greatest risk of Central Nervous System vascular malformations is the occurrence of a cerebral hemorrhage and, consequently, death.

Diagnosis and treatment Central Nervous System (CNS) Vascular Malformations

After analyzing the symptoms and clinical history, the doctor will perform physical and neurological examinations, and will also request the following tests:

  • Arteriography or Cerebral Catheterization
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan
