What is desmoplastic tumor?

26 January 2026

This is a rare type of cancer that usually starts in the tissue lining the inside of the abdomen and pelvis, known as the peritoneum, although it can also spread to other organs in the body, such as the colon, liver, and bladder.

The desmoplastic tumor is most common in male children and young adults, although it can affect anyone.

It is also known as a type of soft tissue sarcoma due to the number of cancerous cells produced in the connective tissues.

While the cause of the desmoplastic tumor is unknown, it is understood that it begins with a genetic abnormality, generating a group of cancer cells that begin to multiply out of control, accumulating and forming tumors, with the capacity to metastasize and spread to other bodily areas.
