What Are the Signs of a Uterine Fibroid?

Que es un fibroma uterino

A fibroid, or uterine myoma, is a growth of tumors in the uterus. These growths are non-cancerous and are the most common type of benign tumor in women, explains Dr. Miguel Corres Molina, gynecology and obstetrics specialist at ABC Medical Center.

The size of a fibroid can vary widely, it can be as small as a bean or as large as a melon. Along with its location, which can be within the muscular wall of the uterus or on its surface, this will determine whether the patient experiences symptoms or not.

“These growths can have different origins and can appear anywhere from adolescence to old age. In all cases, they should be evaluated, especially in people over 50, to determine whether surgery is needed.”

Fibroids are often confused with cysts, which are fluid-filled lesions that appear on the ovaries, whereas fibroids are solid growths that develop in the body of the uterus.

Symptoms of Uterine FibroidsThere are several symptoms that can be linked to the presence of a uterine fibroid, including:

  • Heavy bleeding.
  • Difficulty urinating or having a bowel movement.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Infertility.

Treatment for FibroidsDr. Corres notes that the size and location of the fibroid play such an important role in determining the type of treatment used. In some cases, the doctor may simply recommend monitoring for any changes in the fibroid, while in others, treatment may involve medication or surgery.

As a woman, it’s important to have regular checkups with a specialist to determine whether this condition is present and to receive appropriate treatment when needed.
