Having a vaginal delivery offers major benefits, not just for the baby, but for the mother as well, notes Dr. Gerardo Leopoldo Uranga Sánchez, gynecology and obstetrics specialist at ABC Medical Center.

“The benefits of vaginal delivery are always greater for both mother and newborn, offering health, medical, and financial advantages compared to C-sections, which should only be performed when medically indicated, for example, when the health of the mother or baby is at risk due to a pre-existing or concurrent condition.”

Benefits for the MotherOne of the benefits of vaginal delivery is a shorter hospital stay, since there’s a lower risk of complications. This means the hospital stay can be as short as a few hours or as long as two days.

Since no surgical procedure is involved, postoperative pain and the need for pain medication are also reduced.

Having a vaginal delivery also makes breastfeeding easier to establish, since there’s less pain, mothers can move around sooner, and recover their normal activity faster, which leads to better milk production. This milk is rich in immunoglobulins and antibodies, which strengthen the baby’s immune system by providing protection during the first weeks of life and reducing the risk of serious illness.

Benefits for the BabyAs babies pass through the birth canal, their lungs experience beneficial compression, which helps expel the amniotic fluid that surrounded them in the womb. Babies delivered by C-section, on the other hand, sometimes retain that fluid in their lungs, which can require a stay in an incubator for a few hours or even a few days, a condition known as transient tachypnea of the newborn, notes Dr. Uranga.

In addition, during vaginal delivery, babies pick up bacteria from the mother’s body, which helps shape and support the development of their immune system, leading to a lower likelihood of food allergies, asthma, and even obesity later in life.

It’s important to keep in mind that every birth is unique, so it’s best to talk with your doctor to understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with each type of delivery.
