What Does Hepatitis Feel Like?

Hepatitis is a disease that affects the liver and can have various causes. There are several symptoms of hepatitis that can occur, which is why it’s important to seek proper medical care.

What Are the Symptoms of Hepatitis? There are various causes and symptoms of hepatitis, but all of them cause inflammation and damage to the liver. This can stem from an infectious cause, exposure to toxic substances, or an autoimmune cause.

SymptomsIt’s common for some people to have no symptoms at all when they contract hepatitis, meaning they may not even know they’re infected. Others who do experience symptoms often have:

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, known as jaundice.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Dark-colored urine.
  • Fever.
  • Joint pain.
  • Clay-colored stools.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting or nausea.

The danger of not treating hepatitis properly is that it can become chronic and progress to cirrhosis, scarring of the liver, which can lead to liver failure or even liver cancer.

Types of HepatitisInfectious hepatitis is classified into types A, B, C, D, and E. Toxic hepatitis can be caused by certain poisons, chemicals, medications, supplements, or excessive alcohol consumption, with alcohol being the most common cause in this category. This type of hepatitis is transmitted through contaminated food, water, feces, blood, or other bodily fluids.

Autoimmune hepatitis occurs when a person’s immune system begins attacking the liver. While there’s no clearly established cause, it may be linked to genetic or environmental factors.

Hepatitis can be classified as acute, occurring in the short term, typically between two weeks and six months after exposure to the virus, or chronic, which develops many years later. Alcoholic hepatitis is chronic and takes years to develop.

Preventing HepatitisA common question people have is how to prevent hepatitis. The answer depends on the type of hepatitis, since different prevention methods apply to different types.

  • The hepatitis vaccine helps protect against certain types of the virus and is typically given to children as part of their vaccination schedule.
  • Improving hygiene, such as washing your hands and drinking clean water, can help reduce your risk.
  • Practicing safe sex not only helps prevent hepatitis C, but also other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Additionally, not sharing needles is important for everyone’s safety.

As for alcoholic hepatitis, the only way to prevent it is by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.

Autoimmune hepatitis, on the other hand, can’t be prevented, but if risk factors are present, it can be diagnosed early and managed with appropriate measures to help reduce symptoms and potential complications.

Since many types of hepatitis can be asymptomatic, it’s important to get tested regularly to catch it early.
