After age 50, men become more likely to experience erectile dysfunction, a condition estimated to affect around 50% of this population, notes Dr. Johnatan Vitar Sandoval, urology specialist at ABC Medical Center.
Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection, whether for sexual activity or any other purpose requiring one.
The World Health Organization estimates that 322 million men worldwide will be affected by erectile dysfunction by 2025, an increase of 152 million men compared to 1995.
This condition results in difficulty maintaining an erection, which can make proper penetration difficult, interfere with sustaining sexual activity from start to finish, and ultimately prevent adequate sexual satisfaction.
Erectile dysfunction can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on factors such as firmness, duration, and underlying cause. It can result from any of the following:
- Metabolic conditions: diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity can all contribute to erectile dysfunction.
- Substance use: alcohol and tobacco use can also affect this process.
- Low physical activity: a sedentary lifestyle has also been linked to this condition.
- Age: age is another contributing factor, especially after 50.
- Mental health: in some cases, stress or emotional issues can lead to erectile dysfunction.
If you think you may be experiencing erectile difficulties, it’s a good idea to talk to a urologist, who can help identify the underlying cause and, based on that, recommend the most appropriate treatment option, notes Dr. Vitar.
