Hematopoietic Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

Hematopoietic Cell or Bone Marrow Transplant is a crucial form of treatment with potential for cure for patients with hematologic malignancies (cancers that originate in or usually spread to the bone marrow) such as leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma. Sometimes children with solid tumors who are going to receive extremely high doses of chemotherapy can also benefit. Hematological diseases, such as aplastic anemia, and immune diseases are also treated.

Bone Marrow Transplant consists of the transfusion of healthy stem or hematopoietic stem cells to a patient after eliminating their own diseased bone marrow through chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy (conditioning regimen). Hematopoietic cells are obtained from the donor’s bone marrow or peripheral blood.

We are leaders in hematopoietic cell and bone marrow transplant with a solid experience of more than 12 years performing cutting-edge treatments with a highly trained medical team that specializes in adult and pediatric patients, whose cases are evaluated by a multidisciplinary committee to determine eligibility and optimal treatment.

Hematopoietic Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

We offer autologous transplant, allogeneic transplant, and the innovative haploidentical transplants, obtaining internationally comparable results.

Our center is not only a leader in the performance of transplants, but also in the treatment of complications with novel methodologies, such as the use of extracorporeal photopheresis.

Autologous transplant

The donor is the patient; the patient is its own donor.

Allogeneic transplant

The donor, related or unrelated, is compatible with the patient.

Haploidentical transplants

There is a medium compatibility between the donor (a family member) and the patient, requiring post-transplant cyclophosphamide.

Compatibility determination

Compatibility is determined by studying proteins on the surface of all cells in the body called human leukocyte antigens (HLA). Although there are a large number of antigens of the HLA system, the 5 most important are called A, B, C, DRB1 and DQB1. Since we inherit one from the father and one from the mother, a total of 10 antigens are tested. For the compatibility study, a blood or saliva sample from the patient and the possible donor is enough. We perform high resolution compatibility tests to obtain the most accurate results.

Hematopoietic Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

Hematopoietic stem cells are infused through the tunneled catheter and the patient remains under close medical supervision.

A great multidisciplinary team of transplant professionals works together to take care of you as you go through each phase of the transplant, and in your post-transplant follow-up.
