Many women experience heartburn during pregnancy.
Heartburn is a burning sensation in the throat and chest that occurs when stomach acid reaches the esophagus, a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux, which is quite common.
Why Does Heartburn Happen During Pregnancy?
During pregnancy, heartburn occurs because rising levels of the hormone progesterone can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that keeps stomach acid from moving back up.
As a result, when stomach acid escapes into the esophagus, it causes that burning or heartburn sensation.
Beyond hormonal factors, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, increased pressure from the growing uterus on the stomach, due to the baby’s growth, can also contribute to heartburn.
While heartburn during pregnancy is most commonly felt as a burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest, other symptoms can also occur, such as:
- Acid regurgitation
- A feeling of indigestion
- Nausea
- Sore throat
Just as symptoms can vary from woman to woman, their intensity can also range from mild to more severe.
It’s also worth noting that although heartburn during pregnancy is common, not every pregnant woman necessarily experiences it.
How Can You Relieve Heartburn During Pregnancy?
To relieve heartburn during pregnancy, first understand what’s causing it. That said, lifestyle changes often help, such as eating several small meals throughout the day instead of a few large ones and avoiding foods that tend to trigger heartburn, like spicy, fatty, or acidic foods.
Beyond diet, other helpful steps include avoiding lying down right after eating, drinking fluids between meals rather than during them, and wearing loose-fitting clothing. All of these can help reduce how often heartburn occurs.
What Can You Take for Heartburn During Pregnancy?
If you’re considering taking something for heartburn, it’s important to check with your doctor before taking any medication. Keep in mind that anything you take can affect not just you, but your baby as well. It’s also important to determine whether the discomfort is actually heartburn, gastritis, or something else.
Once your doctor completes the appropriate evaluation, they may prescribe different medications depending on your situation, including antacids, calcium supplements, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors.
Beyond medication, you can also try home remedies for heartburn during pregnancy, such as drinking cold milk, eating bland or easy-to-digest foods, chewing sugar-free gum to promote saliva production, or using baking soda or ginger.
That said, no matter what remedy or medication you’re considering, it’s best to check with your doctor before using it.
