How to Stay Motivated at Work

Mental health and wellbeing are two extremely important factors, since they shape how we think, how much we enjoy life, and how we interact with others. That’s why it matters so much to enjoy our work and feel motivated as we carry out our job responsibilities, with a clear understanding of how what we do contributes to the company’s overall goals.

We often mistakenly believe motivation comes only from external factors, but that’s not the case. Actively working on our own motivation, at work and in other areas of life, gives us the tools we need to get through each day with better results.

Motivation and satisfaction should be a natural part of our work, shaped by how we approach and handle the obstacles we come across along the way, since not every day will feel rewarding, and some projects simply won’t be as exciting as others.

Staying motivated at work requires taking care of your mental health by managing stress and making time for yourself. Finding balance between your personal, social, and professional life matters, if you don’t take time for yourself or give your mind a break from work, your motivation will suffer, and you’ll risk becoming physically, mentally, and emotionally burned out.

Some of the main causes of workplace demotivation include: excessive workload, unreasonable tasks and responsibilities, long work hours, conflicts with managers or coworkers, lack of recognition, and uncertainty about job security, among others.

All of this can affect your health and wellbeing in several ways:

  • Cognitive: difficulty making decisions or concentrating.
  • Behavioral: substance misuse, addictions, and sleep disturbances.
  • Emotional: anxiety, depression, low mood, and irritability.
  • Physical: digestive issues, heart conditions, muscle tension, recurring headaches, and back or shoulder pain.
  • Social: aggressive or withdrawn behavior, reduced socializing and communication.

Tips for Staying Motivated at Work:

  • Reflect on why you do your job. What makes this role meaningful to you? Your reasons shouldn’t be limited to salary and benefits, try to understand the deeper purpose behind your professional efforts. If you’re currently lacking motivation, what can you do to reconnect with it?
  • Remember the impact your work has on others, even in the smallest tasks.
  • Have a clear sense of direction and progress in your career. What’s your ultimate goal? What steps do you need to take each day to work toward it?
  • Be proactive in seeking out training, development, and advancement opportunities whenever you can. Keep learning new things.
  • Take ownership of your responsibilities and own your mistakes without excessive guilt.
  • If you’re having issues in your role, or feel there are things that could be improved, don’t be afraid to share your perspective with your manager in a professional way.
  • Ask your manager about the growth opportunities available to you within the organization.
  • Reward yourself when you do your job well, allowing yourself a small treat to celebrate your accomplishments is an important part of staying motivated.
  • Decorate your workspace with things you enjoy that bring you a sense of well-being and help you stay organized.
  • Take short breaks during the workday to breathe, take a short walk, get some fresh air, or do light stretching at your desk.
  • Limit overtime and excessively long workdays.
  • Avoid bringing work home.
  • Prioritize your tasks and set clear deadlines.
  • Use your lunch break for a quick workout, or to rest your mind with relaxation techniques.
