The International Childhood Cancer Organization established February 15 as International Childhood Cancer Day in 2002 to raise awareness about this condition, promoting early detection, and improving access to appropriate treatment for children, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
As part of this commemoration, ABC Medical Center participated by hosting several webinars and an event featuring talks and conferences on topics of great relevance to this medical condition, which affects millions of children annually.
- Monday, February 24 – Precision Medicine in Pediatric Oncology, presented by Dr. Carolina Eugenia Vaisman.
- Tuesday, February 25 – The Importance of Genetic Diagnosis in Childhood Cancer, presented by Dr. Melania Abreu González.
- Wednesday, February 26 – Limb and Organ Salvage in Pediatric Oncologic Surgery, presented by Dr. Rodrigo Díaz Machorro.
Following this, on Thursday, February 27, a hybrid-format day of talks and conferences was held at the Susan Lowell Auditorium on the Observatorio Campus, with 60 attendees present in person and 45 attendees participating online.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Alberto Olaya Vargas, pediatric oncologist and director of the Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Program at ABC Medical Center.
The following lectures were presented during the day:
- Epidemiological Perspectives of Childhood Cancer in Mexico and the World, presented by Dr. Jaime Shalkow Klincovstein.
- Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Scope and Achievements at ABC Medical Center, presented by Dr. Yadira Melchor Vidal.
- CAR T-Cell Therapy Transfer, presented by Dr. Alberto Olaya Vargas and Dr. Jesús Ponce Cruz.
To close the event, the Volunteer Ladies, also known as the Pink Ladies, donated 12 wigs and 12 children’s turbans to support young patients facing this disease. These contributions help improve self-esteem, which in turn positively impacts treatment outcomes.
ABC Medical Center expresses its gratitude to the medical staff, the Volunteer Ladies group, and to the patients and their families, whose support helped make this event a success, offering up-to-date information on the disease, diagnosis, and treatment of various types of childhood cancer.
