Platelet donors are people who, instead of donating blood in the traditional way, choose to donate platelets, a blood component that helps with clotting. Platelets are often given to children or adults with cancer, or to those about to undergo a specific type of treatment.
Platelets are essential for blood clotting, clumping together and sticking to the walls of blood vessels. Once a wound is sealed, they begin releasing various chemical substances that support the clotting process.
How Can I Donate Platelets?Platelet donation is done through a process called apheresis. Using a special machine, platelets are separated from the blood and collected in a bag, while the rest of the blood is returned to the donor. Thanks to this process, up to six units of platelets can be collected from a single donor.

Can I Donate Platelets with Any Blood Type?Generally speaking, the requirements for donating platelets are the same as for donating blood. These include being of legal age and no older than 65, weighing at least 50 kg (110 lbs), not being ill on the day of donation, and having no history of hepatitis B or C, HIV/AIDS, syphilis, among others.
For platelet donors specifically, it’s necessary not to have had any previous pregnancies and not to have received blood component transfusions. It’s also recommended to talk with the specialist about any medications taken in the days leading up to the donation, since some can affect platelet function.
