Joint Replacement
Center

The demand for joint replacements has increased in recent years due to the increase in the population of older adults, as well as early diagnoses of osteoarthritis and advances in technology to perform such replacements.

For this, we have an area specialized in joint replacements that is responsible for providing specific treatment to patients with joint bone wear and hip fractures, through personalized and comprehensive care, before, during, and after surgery, so that the patient can safely and effectively return to their daily activities.

A committee of experts follows up, evaluates, and provides feedback on these processes to obtain the best clinical results.

Hip Fracture

A hip fracture is a break in the femur bone. The elderly and people with osteoporosis are at high risk for this type of fracture due to their bones’ fragility, for which a minor trauma or a fall may be enough to cause the injury. In contrast, most hip fractures in people with normal bones are the result of strong impacts (such as traffic accidents).

In general, hip rupture symptoms are inability to walk and intense pain when moving the affected lower limb, which shortens and rotates outward. Treatment usually goes through hip surgery, which uses different types of techniques such as nails, plates, and full or partial prostheses.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the cartilage that lines the junction of the pelvic bones and the femur. This tissue facilitates movement between the bones and prevents them from rubbing against each other. When the cartilage decreases in thickness and texture or disappears, the correct interlocking between the femur and the pelvis is lost, which causes hip osteoarthritis. This pathology’s main indicator is pain, which is located mainly in the groin.

Hip osteoarthritis is a chronic disease (lifelong) and, in general, it tends to progress very slowly over the years. Treatment consists of rehabilitation exercises, but in the most severe cases, you can opt for hip surgery.

Hip and Pelvis Surgery

It is the surgery performed to repair a break or injury in the upper part of the thigh bone. This bone is called the femur. Hip surgery varies depending on the location of the injury, for example, if it is in the femoral neck you may need hip pinning. Likewise, if it is an injury to the majority of the hip, it may require a prosthesis.

After hip surgery, a rest of 3 to 5 days is required and it takes from 3 to 4 months to a year to fully recover.

Hip replacement surgery

Total hip replacement surgery is one of the procedures that has revolutionized medicine since it allows the patient to restore their quality of life after having limited mobility and pain.

In this video, Dr. Justino Fernández, orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Center, talks about total hip surgery, the types of prostheses that exist, technique, and recovery.

Knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is the wear of the cartilage that covers the bones of the joint (femur, tibia, fibula, and patella). It is the part of the skeleton that most frequently suffers from osteoarthritis since it supports the weight of the body and the weight of the objects that we carry when we are standing or moving. The cartilage avoids bone friction in knee movements, facilitating its gliding and cushioning the blows.

Cartilage wear and tear over the years and aging are what cause osteoarthritis. The main symptom of the patient with knee osteoarthritis is pain.

Treatment includes a rehabilitation exercise program and a series of drug treatments that help relieve symptoms of the disease. In addition, obese patients need to follow a diet to lose weight. In some cases when pain is disabling and symptoms of the disease are not relieved, the doctor may recommend knee replacement surgery.

Knee prosthesis

Knee prosthesis is the replacement of the joint with a piece of synthetic material through surgery, indicated in cases in which the joint is severely damaged by osteoarthritis.

Knee replacement is indicated when the degree of deterioration of the knee and the pain it causes prevents the patient from walking. These types of implants are reproductions of the bones that make up the knee, made of various metals and plastic materials that promote flexion and extension of the joint.

There is a titanium knee replacement for patients allergic to metal alloys. Generally, a patient who has had a knee replacement can go to work within three to six months.

Shoulder and Elbow

Shoulder injuries are among the most common in both work and sports life. We are interested in studying these injuries in detail and detecting your risk activities that could cause or favor their appearance or worsen their evolution, with special emphasis on timely treatment and periodic health surveillance, as well as the best surgical treatment if so required.
