What is binge eating disorder?

11 December 2025

It is a behavioral eating disorder characterized by the rapid and compulsive intake of food, where the person seems to have no control over eating. Despite not being hungry and feeling full, they continue to eat, which can pose a risk to their health and, in some cases, lead to death.

Although anyone can develop Binge Eating Disorder (BED), it is more frequent in women, especially during adolescence and young adulthood.

The causes of Binge Eating Disorder are currently unknown, but clinical research indicates that the following factors may be involved:

  • Biological
  • Behavioral
  • Genetic
  • Psychological
  • Social

It can also be due to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and body weight bullying, among others.

Unlike other eating disorders, in Binge Eating Disorder, the person does not eliminate or vomit the large amounts of food consumed; they only feel guilt, disgust, or shame. Binge eating episodes usually repeat at least once a week.
