21:53 - 4 May , 2021

Disease

Cyclothymic disorder or cyclothymia is a mental condition that causes extreme mood swings, so the patient may experience periods of depression or extreme euphoria. It is considered a kind of bipolar disorder, but less serious.

These mood swings can occur suddenly in relatively short periods, and it is important to go to a mental health specialist when the first symptoms appear since if they are not diagnosed and treated promptly, there is a risk that cyclothymia will evolve into bipolar disorder, so the treatment plan usually combines psychotherapy and medication.

Diagnosis and treatment Cyclothymia (cyclothymic disorder)

Once your doctor analyzes your symptoms and clinical history, they will perform a physical examination and request blood and urine tests to rule out any underlying physical condition.

Likewise, they will refer you to a mental health specialist who will perform a psychological examination and will ask you to keep a record of your moods to measure the degree of your condition and have the ability to establish whether it is cyclothymia, bipolar disorder, or some other mental condition.

The purpose of the treatment will be to control the symptoms, reduce mood swings, and prevent your condition from evolving into bipolar disorder; mainly through drugs and psychotherapy.
