What is dental tissue malformations?

This refers to congenital morphological abnormalities in the dental enamel, dentin, and cementum that occur during odontogenesis, which is the formative process of the teeth in the fetus’s intrauterine life.

Dental Tissue Malformations can be of various types:

  • By shape:
    • Dens in Dente :
      Also known as dens in dente, caused by the invagination of the crown.
    • Gemination:
      May appear as two crowns with a single root.
    • Dilaceration:
      Curvature in the crown or root.
    • Fusion:
      Union of two or more tooth buds resulting in one large tooth.
    • Concrescence:
      Dental union only by cementum.
    • Taurodontism:
      Internal structural abnormality of the molars.
    • Enamel Pearl:
      A bulge of enamel on the tooth root.
  • By size:
    • Microdontia:
      Reduced size of the teeth.
    • Macrodontia:
      When the size of the teeth is larger than normal.
  • By Number:
    • Hypodontia and Oligodontia:
      Absence of teeth.
    • Hyperdontia and Supernumerary:
      Excessive number of teeth.
  • By Structure:
    • Enamel Affections:
      • Hypocalcification.
      • Hypomaturation.
      • Amelogenesis imperfecta.
      • Hypoplasia.
    • Dentin Affections:
      • Radicular dysplasia.
      • Coronal dysplasia.
      • Dentinogenesis imperfecta.

The symptoms of dental tissue malformations are diverse, as they depend on the type of anomaly and the degree of affection it produces.

Once the dentist analyzes the patient’s symptoms and clinical history, they will perform a dental examination. Depending on the type of malformation, they may be able to diagnose it with a simple visual inspection or may require X-rays to observe internal damage.
