What is morning sickness?

10 December 2025

This is a condition characterized by the presence of nausea and vomiting, especially during the morning due to pregnancy, but it can also appear at any time.

Morning sickness is most frequent during the first three months of pregnancy, and in rare cases, it can progress to hyperemesis gravidarum, which consists of a considerable loss of fluids or a decrease in pre-pregnancy body weight, which may require hospitalization and intravenous fluid therapy.

Although the cause of morning sickness is unknown, clinical studies indicate that it may be due to the hormonal changes characteristic of pregnancy. However, there are a number of factors that can also influence it, such as:

  • Family members with hyperemesis gravidarum.
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum in a previous pregnancy.
  • Nausea and vomiting due to migraines or motion sickness before becoming pregnant.
  • Morning sickness in previous pregnancies.
  • Pregnancy with a female fetus.
  • Multiple pregnancy or twins.
  • Overweight.

Signs and symptoms Morning Sickness

Symptoms generally appear before the ninth week of pregnancy, primarily triggered by certain spicy foods or strong odors, and usually disappear by the middle of the second trimester. They include:

  • Hot flashes.
  • Excessive salivation.
  • Nausea.

If nausea and vomiting are intense and recurrent, they can cause:

  • Accelerated heart rate.
  • Weakness.
  • Dehydration.
  • Imbalance of body fluids.
  • Reduced or no urine production.
  • Dry mouth.

Diagnosis and treatment Morning Sickness

The doctor will analyze your symptoms and clinical history, perform a physical exam, and if necessary, request blood and urine tests.

The treatment for morning sickness aims to alleviate symptoms through:

  • Anti-nausea medications.
  • Vitamin B-6 supplements.
  • Abundant fluid intake.

If you have hyperemesis gravidarum, it will be necessary to hospitalize you to administer intravenous fluids and medications.
