What is Painful sexual intercourse?

It is when women feel pain before, during, or after having sexual intercourse, which can be caused by multiple causes, ranging from physiological and medical factors to psychological ones.

Dyspareunia or painful sexual intercourse is a condition that many women have suffered at some point in their lives.

There are several reasons why a woman may feel pain during penetration, either at the moment the penis enters or when deepening the penetration, including:

  • Lubrication problems due to lack of arousal, menopause, breastfeeding, intake of antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives, and other drugs.
  • Trauma and injuries resulting from accidents or surgeries.
  • Kidney or urinary tract infections.
  • Inflammatory skin disorders.
  • Vaginal spasms (vaginismus).
  • Congenital genital defects.
  • Endometriosis.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease.

The characteristics of the pain are:

  • On penetration.
  • During each penetrating movement.
  • When reaching deep penetration.
  • Burning.
  • Painful stabbing after intercourse, which can last several hours.

Diagnosis and treatment Painful sexual intercourse

Once the doctor analyzes your symptoms and medical history, they will ask you a series of questions about your sex life and the nature of the pain you are experiencing.

Additionally, they will perform a physical examination, including a pelvic exam, an ultrasound, and other tests that the specialist deems necessary to determine the cause.

The treatment to follow will be established depending on the origin of the pain but usually includes:

  • Medication.
  • Desensitization therapy.
  • Sex therapy.
  • Psychological therapy.
