What is paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous system?

Paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous system are a group of conditions that arise as a result of the side effects of cancer and the activation of the immune system. The immune system not only fights cancer cells but also attacks the cells in the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and peripheral nerves.

These syndromes can damage coordination and muscle movement, memory, thinking ability, and sensory perception.

They manifest most frequently in patients with breast, ovarian, lung, and testicular cancer. However, they can also affect other organs.

  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Memory loss.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Loss of balance.
  • Visual disturbances.
  • Movement problems.
  • Abnormal sensations.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Paraneoplastic Syndromes
